Looks like Sharon Stone better keep her legs crossed.

According to Us Weekly, the Motion Picture Association of America's ratings board has given a preliminary NC-17 rating to Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction, in which the actress reprises her ice pick-wielding role as seductive murder suspect Catherine Trammel.

An NC-17 is considered the kiss of death for a film's commercial prospects, with many exhibitors, including the major theater chains, refusing to book such fare.

The MPAA reportedly objected to 'an orgy scene and a threesome' after viewing a preliminary cut of the sequel. That means producers must either take an ice pick to the controversial scenes to garner a more friendly R-rating, or release the crime thriller as is and hope for the best.

C2 Pictures, which produced Basic Instinct 2, could not be reached for comment. However, a spokeswoman for the MPAA disputed Us Weekly's report, insisting the flick has 'not yet been rated' and leaving open the possibility that filmmakers planted the item looking to start a buzz.

But if the rating snafu is true, it would be a case of déjà-vu for the 47-year-old Stone.

The original 1992 Basic Instinct, directed by Paul Verhoeven from a script by Joe Eszterhas, nearly suffered a similar fate. The MPAA came close to assigning the flick an NC-17 for scenes of graphic sex between Stone's femme fatale and Michael Douglas' hard-boiled detective, as well as the infamous police interrogation scene, in which a panty-less Stone crossed and uncrossed her legs. After some strategic snipping, the film managed to secure an R.

Stone later claimed she was unaware Verhoeven aimed the camera at her crotch and asked him to remove the shot. For his part, the helmer has maintained he never got the request. Either way, the crotch shot helped the film gross $117 million domestically and $400 million worldwide and transformed Stone from a B-movie starlet to major Hollywood player.

Talk of a sequel first surfaced almost a decade ago, with Stone committing to the project in 2000. But a series of spats over who would direct and costar put the project on ice. Stone eventually sued, claiming she had been promised $14 million whether or not the movie got made.

Ultimately, she was persuaded to drop her suit after striking a deal with producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar to Basic Instinct 2 up and running.

Verhoeven and Douglas declined to participate in the follow-up. At one point, directors David Cronenberg and John McTiernan were attached, but the gig finally went to Scottish-born filmmaker Michael Caton-Jones (This Jackal). Several leading men, including Harrison Ford and Pierce Brosnan, turned down the chance to face-off with Stone. Up-and-comer David Morrissey plays a psychiatrist appointed to evaluate Trammel after she once again gets into trouble with the law.

Whatever its rating, Basic Instinct 2: Risk Addiction is slated to hit theaters in March.
